Structured blazers are increasingly built with the same four-way stretch fabrics used in performance leggings, letting them move like sportswear while looking like business casual. Joggers with a tapered, pressed silhouette are replacing traditional trousers in some workplaces, particularly in industries that have embraced more relaxed dress codes since the pandemic reshaped expectations around office attire. Even dress shirts are getting the technical treatment, with moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant fabrics borrowed directly from running gear.

This is a departure from the earlier wave of athleisure, which was largely defined by wearing recognizably “sporty” pieces, think branded leggings and performance sneakers, in non-athletic settings. The newer approach is more about invisible performance: garments that look like ordinary streetwear or workwear but quietly borrow construction techniques, fabric blends and finishing treatments from technical sportswear. A blazer might not look like gym gear at all, but the stretch panel under the arms and the moisture-managing lining tell a different story.

Retailers have taken notice of how this is changing purchasing patterns. Rather than buying separate wardrobes for the gym and the office, many shoppers are consolidating around a smaller number of versatile pieces designed to do double duty. That has pushed brands to think differently about product design, prioritizing pieces that can be styled multiple ways rather than single-purpose garments built for one context only. A single pair of technical joggers, styled with a crisp button-down for a client meeting or a plain tee for a training session, has effectively replaced what used to be two separate purchases.

The color and pattern choices reflect this dual purpose too. Where early athleisure leaned heavily on black and grey to read as “acceptable” outside the gym, current collections are more willing to experiment with color, since the pieces are being designed from the outset to work as everyday clothing rather than smuggled-in gym wear. That has opened space for brands to differentiate on aesthetics rather than just performance claims, since the technical specs of moisture-wicking and stretch have become table stakes across most of the category.

None of this is happening in a vacuum. It tracks closely with broader shifts in how people work, with hybrid and remote arrangements blurring the boundary between “work clothes” and “home clothes” in the first place. A wardrobe built around comfort and versatility makes more sense when your commute might be a walk to a home office rather than a formal dress code enforced five days a week in a corporate building.

For apparel brands, the opportunity is significant, but so is the design challenge. Building a single garment that genuinely performs in a spin class and looks credible in a meeting requires more engineering than either category alone, and it is pushing sportswear and lifestyle design teams to work more closely together than they historically have. The brands getting this right are the ones treating athleisure not as a category of clothing, but as a design philosophy that runs through their entire collection.

Bold Colors and Maximalist Prints Are Taking Over Activewear

For much of the last decade, the safest bet in activewear design was black. Black leggings, black jackets, the occasional muted grey or navy for variety, all built around the logic that neutral colors match everything and never look dated. That logic is being challenged head-on in 2026, as bold color and maximalist print work their way from niche fashion-forward labels into mainstream sportswear lines.

Neon has made a particularly strong comeback. Rather than uniformity for its own sake, teams are increasingly requesting designs that carry specific visual weight and tell a story about local identity or team history, treating the jersey as a canvas rather than simply a uniform.

Manufacturing technology has played a real role in enabling this shift. Digital sublimation printing allows for far more complex, full-coverage designs than traditional screen printing or embroidery ever could, without a significant cost penalty at moderate order volumes. That has made ambitious, highly customized designs accessible to smaller teams and local sports organizations that previously could only afford simple logo placement, not full-garment artwork.

There is a practical dimension to the trend as well. Brighter colors and bolder patterns tend to perform well on social media, where much of today’s activewear discovery happens, and brands are well aware that a garment designed to photograph well online can drive far more organic reach than a plain, functional piece ever could. That has arguably accelerated the pace at which bold design choices move from runway-adjacent fashion lines into everyday gym wear.

Whether this marks a permanent shift away from the neutral-heavy activewear of the past decade, or simply a cyclical swing that will eventually settle back toward simplicity, is an open question. For now, though, the shelves tell a clear story: plain black leggings have company, and a lot of it.

Inclusive and Adaptive Sportswear: Designing for Every Body

Inclusivity in sportswear used to mean, at best, a size chart that stretched a little further than competitors or a handful of colorways marketed toward a specific demographic. That bar has risen considerably. That distinction matters more than it might seem: garments that are simply resized rather than redesigned from the pattern up tend to fit poorly at the extremes, with proportions that were never actually tested on the bodies they are meant to serve. Brands investing seriously in this space are building separate pattern blocks for different size ranges rather than relying on simple grading.

Adaptive design is the other major thread. This extends into categories that have historically lagged on inclusive design, including golf apparel, hiking gear and hunting wear, all of which have traditionally been built around a fairly narrow range of body types and abilities. Suppliers in those categories are now facing more direct pressure from customers to widen size ranges and add adjustable features, particularly as participation in those sports broadens beyond their traditional demographic base.

The business case for this shift has become harder to ignore. Brands that expand sizing and adaptive features report meaningful gains in customer loyalty and repeat purchase behavior, largely because shoppers in underserved size ranges have historically had few reliable options and tend to stick with brands that finally serve them well. In a market where product differentiation on pure performance claims has become difficult, given how similar moisture-wicking and stretch technology has become across competitors, genuine inclusivity is emerging as one of the clearer ways for a brand to stand apart.

There is still a considerable gap between marketing language and actual product depth. Some brands advertise “inclusive” collections that, on closer inspection, add only a few additional sizes at the edges without addressing fit or proportion issues at all. Consumer advocacy around this gap has grown louder, with shoppers increasingly willing to call out size-inclusive marketing that does not hold up to scrutiny once the product actually arrives.

Looking forward, expect adaptive and inclusive design to keep moving from a specialty consideration into a baseline design requirement, similar to how moisture-wicking fabric went from a premium feature to a near-universal expectation over the past two decades. The brands treating this as a genuine design discipline, rather than a marketing checkbox, are likely to be the ones that benefit most as customer expectations continue to rise.

From Ocean Waste to Workout Gear: The Rise of Recycled Sportswear

A few years ago, a legging made from reclaimed ocean plastic was a novelty item, usually priced at a premium and marketed narrowly to environmentally conscious shoppers willing to pay extra for the story behind the fabric. That novelty has become considerably more mainstream. Ocean-bound plastic and reclaimed fishing net material are increasingly showing up as standard fiber options across a wide range of activewear categories, from running shorts to swimwear to compression gear, without necessarily carrying the steep price premium that once defined the category.

The process behind this material is more involved than simply melting down plastic bottles. Discarded fishing nets, one of the most persistent and damaging forms of ocean plastic pollution, are collected, cleaned and broken down into a raw nylon material that can then be respun into new yarn. This regenerated nylon performs comparably to virgin nylon in strength and stretch, which has made it particularly popular for swimwear and compression apparel where fabric integrity under stress matters considerably. Coastal plastic waste more broadly, including bottles and packaging collected before it enters the ocean, follows a similar but somewhat simpler recycling path into polyester yarn.

What has changed most in the past couple of years is scale and traceability. Early ocean-plastic sportswear lines often struggled to source consistent volumes of raw material, since collection infrastructure in many coastal regions was limited and inconsistent. Partnerships between apparel brands and dedicated ocean-plastic collection organizations have matured considerably, building more reliable supply chains that can support mainstream product lines rather than small limited-edition drops. Alongside that, traceability technology has improved to the point where some brands can tell a customer roughly where the material in a specific garment was collected, turning what used to be a vague sustainability claim into something closer to a verifiable supply chain story.

The performance case for these materials has also strengthened. Early skepticism centered on whether recycled fiber could genuinely match the durability and feel of virgin material, and in some early products it fell noticeably short. Improvements in the recycling and respinning process have narrowed that gap considerably, to the point where recycled polyester and regenerated nylon are now used in performance-focused product lines rather than being confined to casual or lifestyle pieces where fabric demands are lower.

Cost remains a genuine constraint. Collecting, cleaning and processing ocean plastic is still more resource-intensive than working with virgin synthetic material, and that cost differential gets passed along the supply chain in some form, even as competition and scale have brought prices down considerably from where they started. Brands have generally chosen to absorb some of that cost rather than pass all of it to consumers, treating sustainable sourcing as a long-term brand investment rather than a short-term margin play.

There are legitimate limits to how far this material story can go. Recycled synthetic fabric still sheds microplastic fibers during washing, a problem that ocean-plastic sourcing does not solve on its own, and some environmental researchers have raised concerns that reclaimed-plastic marketing can obscure the fact that synthetic fabric, however sourced, is not fully biodegradable. Even accounting for those limitations, diverting existing ocean plastic into useful material rather than manufacturing new virgin plastic represents a meaningful shift, and one that is increasingly showing up in ordinary gym bags rather than just specialty eco-conscious storefronts.

Beyond the Gym: Sport-Specific Apparel Is Having a Growth Moment

For a long time, a large share of the activewear market operated on a one-size-fits-most logic: a basic legging or tee could plausibly serve a runner, a yoga practitioner and a weightlifter with only minor variation between them. That logic is eroding as demand grows for apparel purpose-built around the specific mechanics of individual sports, rather than generic athletic wear stretched across every activity.

Combat sports offer one of the clearer examples. Grappling, striking and mixed disciplines each place different demands on apparel, from rash guards built to resist tearing during ground grappling to gloves and wraps engineered around specific striking mechanics. Suppliers serving this category report growing demand not just from competitive athletes but from a broader wave of recreational participants who have taken up disciplines like Brazilian jiu-jitsu or boxing as a fitness alternative, bringing with them the same expectations around quality and purpose-built design that competitive athletes have always had.

Lacrosse and wrestling tell a similar story, with growth driven substantially by expanding youth and school-level participation. As these sports gain broader footholds outside their traditional regional strongholds, demand has grown for apparel and gear tailored to their specific movement patterns and protective needs, rather than athletes and programs settling for adapted football or general team-sport equipment. Suppliers that have built dedicated product lines around these sports, rather than treating them as an afterthought within a broader team-sports catalog, have found a receptive and growing customer base.

Outdoor-adjacent categories, particularly hiking and biking, are experiencing their own version of this shift, driven partly by broader lifestyle trends that have pulled more casual participants into activities once dominated by dedicated enthusiasts. That influx has expanded the market for apparel that balances genuine technical performance, weatherproofing, abrasion resistance, ventilation, with a level of everyday wearability that hardcore technical gear has not always prioritized. The result is a growing middle tier of hiking and cycling apparel positioned between ultralight technical gear built for serious athletes and casual streetwear that borrows outdoor aesthetics without the performance substance behind it.

Running and yoga remain large, mature categories, but even there, specificity is increasing. Trail running apparel has diverged further from road running gear, with more attention paid to abrasion resistance and weather protection specific to off-road conditions. Yoga apparel has splintered by practice style, with hot yoga favoring different fabric weights and moisture management than restorative or slower-paced practices.

What ties these trends together is a broader shift in how consumers think about athletic apparel purchases. Rather than buying a handful of generalist pieces meant to cover any activity, more shoppers are building smaller, activity-specific wardrobes optimized for the particular sports they actually do regularly. That has created real opportunity for brands and suppliers willing to specialize, since a genuinely well-designed piece of sport-specific apparel can command loyalty, and often a price premium, that a generic alternative struggles to match.

For teamwear and apparel suppliers watching this shift, the implication is fairly direct: the safest long-term strategy is increasingly not the broadest possible catalog, but deep, credible expertise in a defined set of sports where genuine differentiation is still possible.
